Over 1,400 Tuwa people live by the beautiful Kanas Lake. Before Kanas was opened to tourists, they lived in an almost isolated world. Some scholars believe the Tuwa to be the descendents of old, sick or disabled soldiers left behind by when he led his troops west. The inhabitants customarily live in yurts, but there are also a few timber houses in the village. Few tourists come to Tuwa in water, when the snow-covered village appears like an ink painting.
